A dramatic rescue unfolded in Lewiston on Thursday afternoon, involving state officers, emergency crews, and one very unexpected victim.
LEWISTON, N.Y. — A deer trapped in a 10-foot-deep dry well in Niagara County was safely rescued on Thursday afternoon with the help of state environmental officers and local emergency crews.
The incident was reported around 1:15 p.m. Thursday. The deer became trapped off of Upper Mountain Road in the Town of Lewiston, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

Environmental conservation officer George Scheer, a licensed wildlife rehabilitator, and the Niagara County Tech Rescue Team responded to the scene. Working together, they hoisted the deer from the well.
“The deer was safely released without incident. The well was covered as a preventative measure,” the DEC said.
