ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — North and South Carolina rank among the top destinations for people relocating across the United States, according to a new report.
A November 2025 report by Retirement Living breaks down recent U.S. Census Bureau data by age group and compares where people are moving to and from across the country.
The report ranks North Carolina third and South Carolina fifth, with gains of nearly 59,000 and 55,000 residents, respectively.

Here’s how migration is happening by generation:
Silent Generation: Those born between 1928 and 1945 are moving the least, per the report. Still, those 75 and over are following the trend of moving to Southern states, with Florida, Texas, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia being the most popular destinations.
Baby Boomer: Those born between 1946 and 1964 move at a higher rate, the report shows. Once again, North Carolina and South Carolina place in the top five most popular states for this generation to move to, alongside Florida, Arizona and Nevada.
Generation X: People born between 1965 and 1980 are also choosing to the South at a significant rate, data shows. Similar to Baby Boomers, the five most popular states to move to for Generation X are Florida, Texas, North Carolina, South Carolina and Nevada.
Overall, the Silent Generation, Baby Boomers and Generation X all saw the highest migration to Florida, the most popular state for retirement in the country.

Millennials: People born between 1981 and 1996 are moving at the highest rate of all generations, but to places beyond the Southern region, according to the report. The five states with the highest net migration for Millennials are Texas, Washington, Georgia, Nevada and Maryland, the data shows.
Generation Z: Those born between 1997 and 2012 are leading the growth in the Carolinas. South Carolina and North Carolina take the top spots, with an average inflow of 45,000 and 62,000 new Gen Z residents, respectively. The three other most popular states for this generation are Washington, D.C., Tennessee and Missouri, according to the report.
South Carolina is seeing a net gain of nearly 16,000 Gen Z residents. North Carolina follows closely, with a net gain of 15,000 new residents.
Overall, both North and South Carolina rank in the top five most popular states to move to for nearly every age group in the country.
Eight of the top ten states for net migration in this report are located in the Southern region.
Meanwhile, California, New York and Illinois have experienced the largest net loss of residents.
