MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University golf team captured its third tournament championship this fall at the inaugural Pearl at Kalauoa Invitational in “Aiea, O’ahu, on Thursday.

The Mountaineers finished the tournament at 21-under-par with rounds of 291-280-272=843. West Virginia shot 24-under-par in the final two rounds and defeated 17 teams in the field. UC San Diego was second at -10 and Augusta was third at -7.

This tournament marks WVU’s third championship title in six tries this fall. The Mountaineers won the Island Resort Collegiate in Michigan on Sept. 1 and the Nemacolin Collegiate Invitational on Sept. 30.

Individually, Kaleb Wilson paced the Mountaineers finishing in third place at -8 with rounds of 73-67-68=208, while Nick Turowski finished fifth at -7 with rounds of 76-70-63=209. Turowski’s 63 ties for the second-lowest round in school history. Wilson has posted Top 15 finishes in all six tournaments this fall, while Turowski recorded his fourth Top 5 finish of the fall.

Jack Michael tied for 14th place at -1 with rounds of 71-72-72=215, Ryan Leach tied for 17th place at Even par with rounds of 72-71-73=216 and Westy McCabe tied for 29th place at +3 with rounds of 75-75-69=219. Harrison Thompson competed as an individual and tied for 23rd place at +1 with rounds of 73-75-69=217.

“I’m very happy for the guys, proud of their preparation and the way they competed this week,” coach Sean Covich said. “We got off to a slow start in round one, but they never gave up, kept battling and then played some phenomenal golf the last few rounds. This was a special team win and a great way to end the fall season.”
The Mountaineers closed out the fall with a 71-14-0 record, the most wins recorded this fall by any Division I college golf team. West Virginia will open its spring season on Feb. 2-3 at the Battle at Briar’s Creek in Johns Island, South Carolina.
