PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — The government shutdown, now in its 39th day, is having major impacts on air travel across the United States.

The Portland International Airport (PDX) has reported at least 32 delays and 16 cancellations for Saturday, with two delays and 17 cancellations are already mapped out for Sunday.

This comes as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has mandated flight reductions at 40 major airports, including PDX.

This is the longest federal government shutdown in U.S. history, with at least 900,000 furloughed federal employees.

Airlines have been ordered to cut 10% of daily flights by Nov. 14, and reports hint cuts could reach 20% closer to Thanksgiving.

The cuts are being made in efforts to take some of the pressure off of working air traffic controllers and airport staff who received their last paycheck on Oct. 3rd.

“With continued delays and unpredictable staffing shortages, which are driving fatigue, risk is further increasing, and the FAA is concerned with the system’s ability to maintain the current volume of operations,” the FAA Emergency Order from Nov. 6 read. “Accordingly, the FAA has determined additional mitigation is necessary.”

Aside from PDX, major airports impacted include Seattle/Tacoma International, Los Angeles International, Denver International, Honolulu International, Phoenix Sky Harbor International, and many more.

The FAA said the restrictions will remain in place until after the government is open and funding is lifted, and after they determine stress on the system has decreased.

According to Aviation Analyst John Nance, when the funding is restored, it won’t be all smooth sailing getting airport operations back on track.

“Once that happens, there are a lot of people that are going to happen to be repositioned, a lot of airplanes are going to have to be repositioned,” Nance said.

He further explained, “The schedules will have to be rebuilt, and from the air traffic controllers point of view, there are a lot of very tired controllers out there that are going to need some rest as well as money in their pockets.”
