FARGO, N.D. (Valley News Live) -The Red River Raiders Marine Corps League and the Wahpeton Marine Corps Reserve unit gathered this weekend to mark a historic milestone — the 250th birthday of the United States Marine Corps.
The Marine Corps, founded on Nov. 10, 1775, is celebrating two and a half centuries of service built on the values of honor, courage and commitment.
“It’s just pride — I’m very proud of the Marines that I work for,” said Aaron Talbott, executive officer of the 4th Battalion Support Company.
For Marines like Tyler Harris, a military police officer with the Marine Corps Reserve, the evening’s celebration was about honoring the traditions that define the Corps.
“This really honors tradition,” Harris said. “The Marine Corps has been known and founded on tradition.”
That tradition was on full display during the celebration — which, according to Marines, often reflects the service’s spirited beginnings.
“The ball gets wild,” joked Staff Sgt. Mercedes Klein of the 4th Law Enforcement Battalion. “The Marine Corps was born in a bar — Tun Tavern in Pennsylvania — so we make sure we celebrate those traditions well.”
For 250 years, the Marine Corps has prided itself on excellence, resilience and an unbroken record of dedication.
“The Marine Corps has never lost, so we take pride in that,” Klein added.
“Winning battles is our goal,” said Harris. “Second place isn’t an option for the Marine Corps. It’s always first, and that’s what we strive to continue to do.”
For many, the milestone represents not just history, but the legacy of generations who have answered the call to serve.
“Today, being the 250th birthday of the Marine Corps, is an astounding goal,” Talbott said. “We’ve continued to uphold our standards and our reputation among ourselves and within the world — that’s what makes us who we are today.”
