The Tampa Bay Buccaneers broke many Pittsburgh Steelers fans’ hearts when they poached S Sebastian Castro from Pittsburgh’s practice squad earlier this season. Now they have waived him, per the NFL transaction sheet.

If he clears waivers, he will be free to sign wherever he chooses. Given that Pittsburgh never intended to part ways with him, it’s possible they could seek a reunion and sign him to the practice squad once again. The deadline for a team to claim Castro is 4:00 PM ET on Monday. It’s unlikely the Steelers would put in a claim, as that would require them to clear space on their 53-man roster. They wouldn’t be able to sign him to the practice squad unless he clears waivers.

Castro appeared in just one game for the Buccaneers with one total tackle on six special teams snaps. He did not play a defensive snap for them.

The Steelers initially signed Castro as an undrafted free agent after he surprisingly went undrafted in the 2025 NFL Draft out of Iowa. He had a strong spring and summer with the team at OTAs, training camp, and in the preseason.

Castro has experience playing all around the secondary from his time at Iowa, and that carried over into the preseason in Pittsburgh. He logged 73 snaps at free safety, 20 as a box safety, and 12 as a slot corner during the preseason and was credited for eight total tackles.

The 5112, 203-pound safety ran a 4.58 40-yard dash at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine and posted a 30 1/2-inch vertical jump. He isn’t the most athletic player, but showed good mental processing, play strength, and physicality throughout his time at Iowa.

The Steelers are lacking depth in their secondary at the moment and could stand to strengthen their pipeline of players on the practice squad, especially after releasing nickel CB Beanie Bishop Jr. earlier this week.
