Thanks to s vp for sending this magnificent photo from Columbia Heights Saturday morning:

“I saw the most gorgeous bald eagle early this morning. The reason it caught my attention is because i heard some very loud crows cawing and when I opened my window i I saw that the eagle had gotten one of the (many) dead alley rats.

While it might seem like a small thing, this is a reminder of how toxic rodenticides don’t just kill rodents — they ripple through the entire food chain.

When birds of prey, foxes, coyotes, cats, or dogs eat poisoned rodents, the toxins accumulate in their systems. Many die slow, painful deaths, and the poisons can even contaminate soil and water. Just a PSA that poison doesn’t stop with rats — it harms the very wildlife that keeps our ecosystems healthy.”

If you spot a hawk, any interesting wildlife or celebrity skateboarder Tony Hawk, and get a good photo please send in an email where you spotted them to [email protected]. Thanks! Hawks around Town is made possible by a generous grant from the Ben and Sylvia Gardner foundation.
