A Southeast D.C. mother is asking for the public’s help in finding her 12-year-old son, who went missing Sunday morning after leaving home to walk the family dog.

Demetri Montgomery, who has autism, was last seen near the 5500 block of C Street SE around 7 a.m. His mother, Cynthia Walton, said he left to walk the family’s white pit bull, Skyla, but never returned.

“I’ve been looking for him since about seven this morning,” Walton said. “I’ve been driving around, putting out flyers, passing flyers out to people walking down the street to see if anybody’s seen him.”

Community members have joined the search, spending the day canvassing neighborhoods and helping Walton distribute flyers.

Montgomery is described as a Black male, 5’6” tall, weighing 120 pounds, with a medium brown complexion, black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a green and gray jacket, black sweatpants with white stripes down the sides and dark blue sneakers.

Walton said her son is verbal and approachable. “He’s very, very friendly. He’s very polite,” she said. “He’s not a runaway. He don’t even go outside to play or anything.”

She added that while the dog is friendly, it may be protective of Demetri. “The dog is friendly, but she is protective of Demetri,” Walton said.

Walton urged anyone who sees her son to call police.

She also had a message for her son: “Demetri, if you’re listening, just come home. You not in trouble, you not gonna get yelled at or anything. Just come back home.”
