MONROE, La. (KNOE) – The United States immigration station on Ellis Island closed on Nov. 12, 1954.

Since opening in 1892, the station had processed almost 12 million immigrants.

The number of immigrants had fallen since anti-immigration laws were passed in the 1920s.

During the second world war, the Coast Guard also used the island as a training station.

In the 1980s, the buildings were restored, and in 1990 it was reopened as a museum by the National Parks Service.
