A city along the Jersey Shore is the latest to declare a local state of emergency following a series of storms that have damaged its beaches.
Brigantine’s city council passed the resolution at a Nov. 5 meeting citing “severe beach and dune erosion,” and asked for immediate federal and state assistance.
Officials in Brigantine say the storms, including last month’s nor’easter, have created sand cliffs, and destroyed both berms and dunes in place to protect homes and other infrastructure. The width of the beach has also been reduced.
The damage is widespread, between 15th Street North and Roosevelt Boulevard, the resolution said.
City officials couldn’t immediately be reached Wednesday morning.
Ocean City in Cape May County also passed a similar resolution.
U.S. Rep. Jeff Van Drew, who represents much of the Jersey Shore, has said he is working to coordinate a sand loss response with the Army Corps of Engineers, the federal agency that leads projects to restore the state’s beaches.
