While The Mandalorian and Grogu will be the next Star Wars film released in theaters, work has already been well underway for Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter, which has assembled an impressive cast being led by Ryan Gosling. In honor of the actor’s birthday today, Levy took to Instagram and shared a new behind-the-scenes image from the film on his story.

Admittedly, there’s not a whole lot that can be taken away from the picture, aside from the fact that it seems to be from the same sequence as the first look image released a few months ago. This could just be one of many set pieces from the film, or it could also mean that a majority of the film will take place on water. If so, then it would definitely be a nice change of pace after spending many films on dessert like planets. A chance to explore new aquatic species or even providing new lore for existing races, like the Nautolans, could be really interesting.
We still know very little about the plot for Starfighter other than the fact that it takes place about five years after The Rise of Skywalker. Even so, Levy has been adamant about the fact that the movie is not a sequel or prequel to anything related to either the Skywalker saga or the New Republic storyline being told in Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni’s films. Because of this, Starfighter is the film I’m actually more excited for over The Mandalorian and Grogu, because right now it truly is a blank slate. Plus, seeing a story set in a new timeline with brand new characters is just far more interesting than continuing to go back to events from either the original trilogy or the prequel trilogy.
Star Wars: Starfighter is currently in production and stars Ryan Gosling Flynn Gray, Mia Goth, Matt Smith, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Daniel Ings, Jamael Westman, and Amy Adams. The film hits theaters on May 28, 2027.
