NEW LONDON, Conn. –

Coast Guard started their basketball season with the intensity dial turned up all the way. Both the Bears and Roger Williams came out playing fast, strong, and reckless in the first half. The teams combined for 100 points in the first half but it was the Hawks who took charge midway through the first before opening up a lead as high as 17 late in the half. The Bears however went into the half trailing by a manageable 14 points thanks to late buckets by Aiden Dabbondanza(Gaithersburg, MD) and freshman Ashton Kendall(Baltimore, MD).

After knocking off the rust in the first, the Bears came out with a vengeance in the second, scoring 10 of the first 11 points. With the home crowd behind them all the way, CGA mounted their comeback effort, made difficult by the relentless Roger Williams offense that was led by Ryan Higgins(Boston, MA) who led them with 20 points. After keeping them within reach in the first, it was again the rookie Kendall in the second, this time bringing the Bears within one possession of the lead with a made jumper to make the score 61-59 and a made three pointer to make the score 63-62.

As they had done every time to that point, the Hawks were able to get some breathing room right when the Bears got within reach, opening up leads of 69-62, 74-67, and 81-74 with under seven minutes remaining, After a Luke Farrell layup, neither team scored for over a minute of action before Colin Huang(Irvine, CA) broke through with a clutch three pointer to bring the game down to just one possession again at 81-79. Again after that shot, no one scored for over a minute until a foul by Coast Guard gave RWU guard Ryan Hammarlund(Southington, CT) two free throws. When Hammarlund sunk both, it was fellow Nutmeg Stater and Central Connecticut Conference standout Elijah Parent(Bristol, CT) who answered for the Bears with a three to cut the deficit to just one.

As the game clock ticked under three minutes to go, Coast Guard had not led in over 30 minutes of game time. After an impressive second half of chipping away, that would finally change. With 2:50 on the clock, Luke Farrell(Ortley Beach, NJ) grabbed a rebound and put up a layup off the glass to take an 84-83 lead. With under a minute to go, RWU would tie the score at 87-87 but Elijah Parent again came up huge with a jump shot in traffic that trickled off the front rim and through the net to retake the lead for good. 10 seconds later, after a Hawk miss, Jordan Frazer(Columbia, SC) calmly sunk two free throws to put the game on ice.

The loss drops Roger Williams to 0-2 on the year. They will host Emmanuel College on Saturday November 15th at 3:30 PM.

The Bears today were led tonight by a familiar face and a rising star. Senior and reigning All-Conference forward Luke Farrell led the game with 21 points but just behind him was the freshman Ashton Kendall with 16 points. The double-double machine Farrell added a team high 14 rebounds to his 21 points while Kendall went four for five from beyond the arc in an unforgettable collegiate debut. Just behind him were guards Elijah Parent and Colin Huang each with 15 points, Huang leading the squad in assists with five.

The Bears(1-0) will be at home yet again a week from today with a Wednesday 7:30 PM start vs Sarah Lawrence College.
