Vijay Mittal, M.D., clinical professor of Surgery for the Wayne State University School of Medicine, has been admitted into the American College of Surgeons Academy of Master Surgeon Educators.
The academy strives to advance the science and practice of education across all surgical specialties. Individuals are selected as members following a stringent peer review process. Once inducted, members engage in advancing the academy’s programs and goals, which include advancing the science and practice of innovative lifelong surgical education, training and scholarship in health care; fostering the exchange of creative ideas and collaboration; supporting the development and recognition of faculty; and disseminating advances in education and training to all surgeons.

“This year, we celebrate another cohort of distinguished surgeon educators who are pushing the frontiers of surgical education and making outstanding contributions to our field,” said Ajit Sachdeva, M.D., FACS, FRCSC, FSACME, MAMSE, senior vice president of the ACS Division of Education and co-chair of the academy. “As we welcome these new members, we are excited to continue fostering innovation, collaboration and excellence in surgical education. Together, we will define the future of surgical education and inspire the next generation of educators to advance patient care and professional practice through impactful education.”
A past chair and program director of the Department of Surgery at Henry Ford Providence Hospital, Dr. Mittal is the associate director of Medical Education. He also serves as chair of the Research, Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Committee at Henry Ford.
Dr. Mittal served as program director of the General Surgery Department at Ascension Providence Hospital for more than 25 years. He established the Simulation and Education Center at Providence. He also was the chair of Surgery for the Southeast Michigan Center of Medical Education.
A former president of the Michigan Chapter of American College of Surgeons, the International College of Surgeons U.S. Section, the Academy of Surgery of Detroit, the Detroit Surgical Association and the Indo-American Surgical Association, he received an honorary fellowship in the Association of Surgeons of India for his leadership in global surgical education. He is a founding member of the Transplant Society of India.
Dr. Mittal is the editor-in-chief of the “Comprehensive Textbook of Surgery.”
He recently received fellowship in the Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians of Glasgow.
In 2020, Dr. Mittal was named the Fulbright-Nehru Distinguished Chair for Surgery and Surgical Education by the United States Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the J. William Fulbright Board. The award, which recognized his leadership, education, mentorship and his scholarship in the field of surgery, is a collaboration between the government of India and the United States-India Education Foundation. It is the most prestigious honor given by the Department of State under the umbrella of the Fulbright Board, along with the Government of India and the United States-India Educational Foundation.
