Deputies say they first responded to reports of larcenies around 4 a.m. Thursday. They say they ended up in a chase with a car they believed was involved, which crashed near Green Ridge Road and Green Valley Road in Perinton.

As a result, five people were taken into custody by deputies in connection to the break-ins. According to deputies, they estimate over 100 cars were involved.

Some of the places where cars were broken into included elderly communities and apartment complexes for senior living in Perinton, Fairport, and Penfield.

According to Capt. Matthew Kreuzer from the sheriff’s office, they are still getting calls Friday about people finding damages to their cars.

Of the five taken into custody, three of them, including a 16-year-old, were charged with multiple counts of criminal possession of stolen property. Kreuzer says they stole at least ten credit cards from some of the cars.

A 15-year-old was also charged with criminal possession of stolen property. Kreuzer says a 17-year-old was also involved, but has not yet been charged.

“The age of the people involved shows that we need to find other ways to communicate with these kids out there and these juveniles on what they are doing and find ways to get them out of the system, ” said Kreuzer.

Deputies say one of the other items stolen from the cars in Fairport was a loaded handgun, which was recovered by deputies in a nearby wooded area.

During a press conference Friday, MCSO released photos from the investigation.
