Crews responding to large house fire in Newport; smoke plume visible from miles away
TODAY, BUT SEVERAL SOAKERS ON THE WAY THIS WEEK, STARTING WITH TOMORROW MORNING. THE TIMING AND IMPACT ON YOUR PLANS, PLUS A LIVE LOOK INSIDE CVG THIS MORNING, ONE OF THE 40 AIRPORTS WHERE FEDERAL FLIGHT RESTRICTIONS PUT IN PLACE DURING THE GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN JUST ENDED SECONDS AGO. WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOUR HOLIDAY TRAVEL PLANS AND ANOTHER TWIST IN THE UNCERTAINTY OVER SNAP. OHIO FAMILIES EXPECTED TO SEE THEIR FULL BENEFITS THIS WEEK, BUT BIG CHANGES ARE COMING NATIONWIDE THAT WILL AFFECT WHO IS ELIGIBLE. THIS IS WLWT NEWS FIVE TODAY, LEADING THE WAY. WE ARE STARTING THE WEEK A BIT CHILLY, BUT IT IS DRY OUT THERE. THAT WILL CHANGE THOUGH THIS WEEK. GOOD MORNING! I’M MEGAN MITCHELL AND I’M STEVEN ALBRITTON WITH KELLY RIPPIN. THANKS FOR JOINING US. WE DO HAVE A GOOD AMOUNT OF RAIN COMING THIS WAY, BUT TODAY SHOULD BE ALL RIGHT. YEAH, SO GET OUT AND ENJOY! METEOROLOGIST RANDI RICO, THOUGH, HAS WHAT TO EXPECT BEFORE YOU HEAD OUT THE DOOR TODAY. AND THEN WHAT MIGHT BE OUT THERE TOMORROW AND WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY. YES. SO WE’RE STARTING OUT TODAY WITH DRY CONDITIONS ON THE RADAR. BUT BY THIS TIME TOMORROW MORNING, I’M PROBABLY TRACKING SOME DECENT RAINFALL HERE FOR THE MORNING RUSH AND GET USED TO GRABBING THE RAIN GEAR THIS WEEK BECAUSE WE HAVE SEVERAL ROUNDS OF RAIN COMING OUR WAY, JUST NOT TODAY. WE’RE STARTING OUT WITH MOSTLY CLEAR SKIES, A FEW CLOUDS AROUND EARLY. WE’RE AT 31 DEGREES IN CINCINNATI. ONE OF THE COOLER SPOTS LOOKS TO BE HILLSBORO, DOWN TO ABOUT 25, BUT CLEAR SKIES, COOL TEMPERATURES TO START THE DAY THIS AFTERNOON WITH SOME SUNSHINE AND WITHOUT THE BREEZE FROM YESTERDAY, WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO MAKE IT BACK UP INTO THE LOW OR MID 50S. SO HIGH TEMPERATURES TODAY WILL LIKELY RANGE ANYWHERE FROM 50 TO THE NORTH TO MAYBE 55 DEGREES TO THE SOUTH. LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT THE HOUR BY HOUR OUTLOOK. A LOT OF SUNSHINE FOR US TODAY. YES, CHILLY THROUGH THE MORNING RUSH IN THE 30S, 47 BY NOON, AND THEN WE HEAD UP INTO THE LOW 50S THIS AFTERNOON, LOOKING AHEAD AT A WET WEEK. SEVERAL ROUNDS OF RAIN AGAIN STARTING TUESDAY MORNING. ADDITIONAL RAIN FOR US LATE THURSDAY AND FRIDAY. WE’LL HAVE THE TIMELINE COMING UP, BUT LET’S SEE IF WE HAVE ANY ISSUES ON A DRY COMMUTE FOR YOUR MONDAY MORNING. NO PROBLEMS RIGHT NOW, SO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THAT. THIS IS 275 AT MARSTELLAR. LOOKS GOOD HERE AS YOU MAKE YOUR WAY WEST AND EAST. AND THEN 7175 AT TURFWAY. ALSO STILL CLEAR. SO NO BACKUPS THERE. AS WE BEGIN THIS MORNING, WE’LL TAKE YOU OUT THROUGH TO 75. WE’RE STILL FREE OF SLOWDOWNS, NO CRASHES OR BROKEN DOWN VEHICLES IN BUTLER AND WARREN COUNTY. ANY KIND OF PROBLEMS ON THE ROADWAYS WOULD BE A LITTLE BIT FURTHER NORTH HERE THIS MORNING. 74 LOOKS GOOD. SECONDARY ROADS EVEN IN THE GREEN. SO YOU KNOW, MAYBE JUST A SLOWER START TO THE MONDAY WORKWEEK. IN GENERAL, INTERSTATE TRAVEL TIMES AT AROUND 15 16 MINUTES FROM MASON, MONTGOMERY TO DOWNTOWN ON 71 SOUTH HARRISON TO 75 ON 74 EAST AT 21 MINUTES, AND THEN FLORENCE TO DOWNTOWN ON 7175 NORTH COMING IN AT TEN. KELLY. ALL RIGHT, KATIE, THANK YOU SO MUCH. STARTING THE WEEK WITH GOOD NEWS AS WELL IN AIR TRAVEL, IF YOU’VE GOT HOLIDAY TRAVEL PLANS OR PLANS AHEAD OF THE HOLIDAY, THE FAA CUTS WILL OFFICIALLY COME TO AN END TODAY. SO THOSE WERE ORDERED AT 40 AIRPORTS DURING THAT GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN, WHICH DID INCLUDE CVG. AND THAT’S WHERE WE FIND WLWT NEWS FIVE’S NICOLE APONTE ON THIS MONDAY MORNING. SO NICOLE, THIS COMES AHEAD OF A VERY BUSY SEASON. KELLY. GOOD MORNING. I THINK THIS IS WELCOME NEWS FOR A LOT OF TRAVELERS, ESPECIALLY AHEAD OF THAT THANKSGIVING TRAVEL RUSH, ESPECIALLY GIVEN GIVING THEM A PEACE OF MIND BEFORE THEY HEAD TO THE AIRPORT. 6:00 THIS MORNING. TAKE A LOOK AT THE DEPARTURE BOARD RIGHT BEHIND US. IT’S CLEAN. THERE’S NO ORANGE. THERE’S NO RED. TRAVELERS REALLY MOVING SMOOTHLY. TSA TIMES LOOK GREAT HERE AT CVG. VERY WELCOME NEWS, ESPECIALLY FOR THIS MONDAY MORNING. THE FAA PUT FLIGHT RESTRICTIONS IN PLACE DURING THE GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN AS MORE AND MORE AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLERS CALLED OUT. THAT INCLUDED CANCELING UP TO 6% OF FLIGHTS EVERY DAY AT AIRPORTS LIKE CVG, THE AGENCY SAID ITS FOCUS WAS MAKING SURE IT WAS SAFE TO FLY. CALL OUTS HAVE DROPPED SHARPLY SINCE THE GOVERNMENT REOPENED LAST WEEK. THE FAA SAYS STAFFING HAS NOW RETURNED TO WHAT IT WAS BEFORE THE SHUTDOWN. HOWEVER, IT’S IMPORTANT TO NOTE AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLER STAFFING SHORTAGES HAVE BEEN AN ONGOING ISSUE FOR YEARS. AS FOR FLIGHT CANCELLATIONS, DATA SHOWS FEWER THAN 1% OF ALL FLIGHTS NATIONWIDE WERE AFFECTED THIS WEEKEND. NOW, CVG HAS NOT YET COMMENTED ON FLIGHT OPERATIONS RETURNING TO NORMAL. AN IMPORTANT NOTE, THOUGH BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR FLIGHT BEFORE YOU HEAD TO THE AIRPORT TO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING GOES SMOOTHLY. REPORTING LIVE AT CVG THIS MORNING, NICOLE APONTE WLWT NEWS FIVE. NICOLE. THANK YOU. RIGHT NOW WE’RE GETTING AN UPDATE ON WHEN OHIO FAMILIES CAN EXPECT TO SEE THEIR FULL SNAP BENEFITS. THE OHIO DEPARTMENT OF JOBS AND FAMILY SERVICES SAYS YOU CAN EXPECT TO SEE THOSE FUNDS IN YOUR ACCOUNT BY WEDNESDAY. OVER THE WEEKEND, THE AGENCY BEGAN TESTING THE ACCURACY OF PAYMENTS AND PLANS TO RELEASE THOSE FUNDS TO EBT VENDORS THIS WEEK. THIS INCLUDES HOUSEHOLDS THAT RECEIVED NO PARTIAL BENEFITS DUE TO PREVIOUS FEDERAL GUIDANCE. AS FOR KENTUCKY AND INDIANA, THEY RELEASED FULL SNAP BENEFITS OVER THE WEEKEND AS FOOD ASSISTANCE FINALLY RESUMES, SNAP NOW FACES A BIG OVERHAUL, ALL STEMMING FROM THE BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL PASSED OVER THE SUMMER. THESE NEW RULES WERE SUPPOSED TO KICK IN BY NOVEMBER 1ST, BUT WE’RE STILL WORKING TO LEARN. IF THE GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN AFFECTED THE ROLLOUT. BASICALLY, WORK REQUIREMENTS ARE EXPANDING FOR PARENTS, VETERANS AND PEOPLE EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS AND PEOPLE WHO HAVE AGED OUT OF FOSTER CARE. IT ALSO TIGHTENS ELIGIBILITY FOR SOME NONCITIZENS, A CHANGE THE CONGRESSIONAL BUDGET OFFICE SAYS COULD CUT BENEFITS FOR ABOUT 300,000 PEOPLE PER STATE, AND THE USDA SECRETARY SAYS ALL SNAP RECIPIENTS WILL SOON HAVE TO REAPPLY, CITING FRAUD, THOUGH IT’S STILL UNCLEAR HOW THAT PROCESS WILL WORK. WE ARE WORKING TO LEARN MORE ABOUT A PERSON THAT WAS KILLED IN WHAT OFFICIALS ARE CALLING A SUSPICIOUS FIRE IN CLIFTON. IT HAPPENED AROUND 8:00 LAST NIGHT ON SENATOR PLACE NEAR CLIFTON AVENUE. FIREFIGHTERS SAY THAT THERE WAS A SMALL BRUSH FIRE BEHIND A DETACHED GARAGE. OFFICIALS SAY THAT WHILE FIREFIGHTERS WERE PUTTING OUT THAT FIRE, THEY DID FIND A PERSON DEAD NEARBY. THAT PERSON HAD SIGNIFICANT BURNS. IT’S NOT CLEAR RIGHT NOW HOW THEY DIED. THE CIRCUMSTANCES SURROUNDING THIS ARE BEING INVESTIGATED BY THE POLICE DEPARTMENT’S HOMICIDE UNIT. WE HAVE A NEW LOOK THIS MORNING AT HOUSING AFFORDABILITY IN CINCINNATI. MAYOR AFTAB PUREVAL CONTINUES TO SAY IT’S ONE OF HIS TOP PRIORITIES. WLWT NEWS FIVE’S GIACOMO LUCA IS LIVE AT CITY HALL, WITH THE PLAN FOR HOUSING MOVING FORWARD. GIACOMO. YES, STEVE. AND AS HE PREPARES TO ENTER HIS SECOND TERM IN OFFICE, MAYOR PUREVAL SAYS HE’S LOOKING AT NEW WAYS TO MAKE HOUSING MORE AFFORDABLE FOR MORE PEOPLE ACROSS THE CITY OF CINCINNATI. DURING HIS STATE OF THE CITY ADDRESS JUST LAST WEEK, PUREVAL SAID, AS RECENTLY AS FOUR YEARS AGO, CINCINNATI WAS LEADING THE NATION IN RENT INCREASES. SINCE THEN, THE AFFORDABLE HOUSING TRUST FUND, IN TANDEM WITH OTHER EFFORTS, HAS HELPED TRIPLE THE RATE OF WHAT PUREVAL CALLS AFFORDABLE NEW HOMES FOR FAMILIES. THE GOAL AT CITY HALL IS TO CREATE 40,000 NEW UNITS IN THE COMING YEARS TO ADDRESS THE HOUSING SHORTAGE. NOW, WE TALKED TO A NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN THE CITY’S URBAN CORE ABOUT THE COST OF KEEPING A ROOF OVERHEAD. I’M ABLE TO AFFORD LIVING DOWN HERE, BUT I HAVE LOTS OF FRIENDS, BOTH FROM WORK, BUT THEN ALSO FROM SCHOOL AND PEOPLE THAT I KNOW IN THE COMMUNITY WHO ARE REALLY STRUGGLING WITH AFFORDABILITY. AND THAT’S SEEN BOTH IN AFFORDABLE HOUSING BUT ALSO IN, YOU KNOW, MARKET RATE OR EVEN EVEN EXPENSIVE HOUSING. IN ADDITION TO SETTING THAT LOFTY GOAL FOR NEW UNITS, THE CITY IS ALSO KEEPING A REGISTRY OF VACANT PROPERTIES ACROSS THE CITY, TOTALING NEARLY 3000. THAT’S ONE TO MAKE SURE THOSE BUILDINGS AREN’T FALLING APART, BUT ALSO TO IDENTIFY PLACES THAT COULD POTENTIALLY BE TURNED INTO NEW HOUSING FOR OTHER FAMILIES. WE
