In the end, it was a predictable move born of production or lack thereof. Tuesday, the Pittsburgh Penguins placed Philip Tomasino on waivers.
The league’s broadcast rights holders reported the move, as the Penguins do not usually announce waiver moves.
The Penguins acquired Tomasino, 24, last November from the Nashville Predators. Following the season, he was a restricted free agent. Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas signed him to a one-year, $1.75 million contract.
However, Tomasino failed to establish himself as a regular in the lineup and was too often invisible when he was. In nine games this season, Tomasino registered one assist.
If he clears waivers on Wednesday at 2 p.m., the Penguins can assign him to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, where recent Penguins players Ryan Graves and Tristan Jarry have resurrected their careers.
Tomasino has played in 218 games, scoring 34 goals with 95 points.
Tuesday, the Penguins announced they recalled forward Sam Poulin from WBS and placed Ville Koivunen on injured reserve.
If Tomasino clears, the Penguins can stash $1.15 million of his salary in the minors, reducing his NHL cap hit to $600,000.
