Wilson Middle School closes Wednesday amid suspected Norovirus outbreak

  • November 19, 2025

WYANDOTTE, Mich. – Wilson Middle School will be closed on Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2025, as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of illness in the Wyandotte Public Schools community.

Superintendent James Anderson notified the community on Tuesday (Nov. 18) after several students reported feeling unwell around lunchtime.

Although an initial investigation considered a possible food-related cause, the Health Department advised that the illness is likely an outbreak of Norovirus.

The closure will allow maintenance staff to thoroughly disinfect the entire building.

In addition, the district has removed the scheduled turkey entree from the menu at elementary and high schools this week.

Replacement items are being secured and will be finalized soon.

Families are asked to plan accordingly.

Norovirus is a common cause of gastroenteritis and is easily spread through contaminated food, person-to-person contact, or surfaces.

It is sometimes called the “stomach flu” but is unrelated to influenza, which affects the respiratory system.

Symptoms of norovirus include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps, which often last one to two days.

Most people recover without medical attention, but severe cases can lead to dehydration, especially in young children and the elderly.

Students and staff with symptoms should stay home until 48 hours after symptoms stop.

Frequent handwashing with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds is the best way to prevent the spread.

Those who have been sick should avoid preparing food for others for at least three days after recovery.

Most household cleaners do not kill norovirus; bleach is the only reliable disinfectant.

The Health Department’s cleaning and disinfection guidelines are attached for reference.

Superintendent Anderson thanked the Health Department for its quick response and emphasized the district’s commitment to containing the illness and keeping the community healthy.
