Monterey County approves new $139M jail healthcare provider deal

Monterey County supervisors have unanimously voted to bring in a new healthcare provider for the county jail, agreeing to a five-year contract with Correctional Healthcare Partners. Correctional Healthcare Partners, based in San Diego, was selected and the Monterey County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the selection in the form of a five-year, five-month, $139 million contract. This contract includes medical,dental, mental-health, and Jail-Based Competency Treatment services. This decision ends the sheriff’s office’s longstanding partnership with California Forensic Medical Group, also known as Wellpath This decision comes after reports of multiple lawsuits against the former provider, Wellpath, which cost taxpayers millions.The County of Monterey and the private jail health care provider Wellpath settled with the families of several of the victims who died while in custody at Monterey County Jail. “Our partnership with CHP Monterey marks an important step forward in strengthening healthcare within our jail and meeting the standards our community and courts expect,” said Sheriff Tina Nieto. “As we conclude our long-standing contract with CFMG, we want to recognize and thank them for their decades of service to Monterey County.CHP Monterey will begin service at the jail on Jan. 1, 2026.
