A suspect was shot and killed by airport police early Friday morning, St. Louis County police said.

ST. LOUIS — A man is dead after he was shot by police inside St. Louis Lambert International Airport’s Terminal 1 early Friday morning.

Police were doing routine security checks at about 1:05 a.m. when they found a man holding a knife, according to the St. Louis County Police Department. Officers allegedly told the man to drop the knife, and when he refused, they used a stun gun on the man.

The man kept advancing, and that’s when police shot and killed him, a department spokesperson said at a news conference after the shooting.

No other injuries have been reported.

The department said the STL Airport police officers involved in the incident have been with the force for six months and one year, respectively, and both had prior law enforcement experience.

Inside the airport, 5 On Your Side saw a crime scene near the American Airlines ticketing counter.

St. Louis Lambert International Airport CEO and Airport Director Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge shared the following statement Friday regarding the shooting:

Today’s incident in Terminal One was a tragic event for our Airport Community. However, I take great pride in our response. As police responded and county authorities conducted their investigation, we were able to continue normal operations at STL.

The Terminal One MetroLink station was closed for approximately three hours. During that time, shuttle buses were used to transport riders from Terminal One to the Terminal Two MetroLink station.

The airport is cooperating with the St. Louis County Police Department as they continue their investigation.

Lambert posted on X that the Terminal 1 MetroLink station was closed. Passengers were being rerouted to Terminal 2, where shuttles were available from the upper level at Door 2. The station was back open at about 7 a.m.
