A man is dead after being hit by a car on Interstate 42 at Wilson’s Mills early Saturday morning.

State Highway Patrol told the WRAL Breaking News Tracker that around midnight, a 35-year-old man and a woman crossed I-42 (formerly U.S. Highway 70) in Johnston County to get some help for a flat tire.

The two climbed a concrete barricade in the median of the road. The man was then hit by a car going westbound. The woman was not physically injured.

Authorities say the accident occurred during a time of light patchy rain and dense fog.

The driver was also not injured and is not expected to face charges in this incident.

SHP aided Wilson’s Mills police in this investigation.Â
