The Washington Capitals are in the middle of one of their busiest stretches of the year, playing nine games in 16 days. One would think the Capitals would want to limit how much time they spend at the rink, but Sunday, after practice, some of the team’s regulars stayed for an extra session on the ice.
John Carlson, Ryan Leonard, and Brandon Duhaime participated in a pickup game with Carlson’s children and other friends this afternoon. And they had a special guest watching closely: Alex Ovechkin.
In a video shot by RMNB’s Katie Adler, you can hear Ovechkin wildly banging on the glass in support of his Capitals teammates, who appeared to have just scored on the kids. You gotta keep them humble, you know?
Notably, Ovechkin was hidden off to the side behind a column, wearing an all-red sweatsuit and black slides.

Sunday’s scrimmage on the ice was just the latest high-stakes youth game attended by Capitals players this season.
Ovechkin also stuck around after a Training Camp skate to watch his son, Sergei, play. Both Protas brothers, Aliaksei and Ilya, cheered Ovi Jr on from the Capitals bench after he scored.
