Lizzo says she is “still a proud big girl” despite a significant weight loss that left her feeling excluded from the “big business” of the body positivity movement.
“Over 200 pounds. And I love myself as much as I’ve loved myself no matter what the scale says,” the “Truth Hurts” singer, 37, revealed in a personal essay titled, “Why is everybody losing weight and what do we do? Sincerely, a person who’s lost weight” published on Sunday, November 23 on Substack.
Lizzo began losing weight in 2023 to process the pain of a “vicious scandal,” she wrote. Though she did not specify which scandal she was referring to, that year, Lizzo faced different lawsuits accusing the singer of sexual and racial harassment and for creating a hostile work environment. Some of the charges have been dropped against Lizzo, while she and her company, Big Grrrl Big Touring Inc, remain defendants in one case. Lizzo has denied the allegations.
In her essay, Lizzo wrote that as she lost weight, she became publicly regarded as a “performative” member of the body positivity movement.

Writing that she was “sick and tired” of her persona being “overshadowed by my fatness,” Lizzo explained, “I know that my story isn’t unique. I know that women in bigger bodies, especially black women in bigger bodies, have had this working against them since forever.”
“We’re in an era where the bigger girls are getting smaller because they’re tired of being judged,” she continued.
“We have a lot of work to do, to undo the effects of the Ozempic boom,” wrote Lizzo. “I have a lot of work to do to regain the trust of the movement that gave me wings. It is work I am willing and ready to do.”
In January of this year, the singer revealed she had “reached” her “weight release goal,” writing on Instagram: “Let this be a reminder you can do anything you put your mind to.”
