Woman injured in altercation, crash on a Highway 50 off-ramp in Rancho Cordova, CHP says
WE BEGIN WITH BREAKING NEWS. THAT BREAKING NEWS IN RANCHO CORDOVA, WHAT STARTED AS A CRASH SCENE ON HIGHWAY 50 TONIGHT IS NOW A CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION. THANKS FOR JOINING US AT TEN. I’M CURTIS SMITH. AND I’M ANDREA FLORES. THIS ALL HAPPENED ALONG EASTBOUND HIGHWAY 50 AT THE MATHER FIELD ROAD OFFRAMP IN RANCHO CORDOVA. KCRA 3’S CECIL HANNIBAL IS AT THE SCENE RIGHT NOW. SO, CECIL, THIS OFF RAMP HAS BEEN CLOSED FOR MORE THAN FOUR HOURS NOW. ANY INDICATION OF WHEN IT MIGHT REOPEN? YES. SO WE WERE TOLD IT SHOULD BE REOPENING. OR THIS THE SCENE SHOULD CLEAR IN THE NEXT HOUR OR TWO. BUT IT HAS BEEN ACTIVE SINCE WE GOT HERE. WE GOT HERE AROUND 7:00. BUT THAT CALL FIRST CAME IN LIKE YOU SAID, AROUND 530 TODAY. AND MOST OF THE LAW ENFORCEMENT THAT WAS OUT HERE HAS LEFT. BUT CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATORS ARE STILL HERE. YOU CAN SEE FOR YOURSELF AS WE’RE ZOOMING IN. WE’RE RIGHT HERE BY THE EXIT 15 SIGN. AND YOU CAN SEE THAT THEY ARE RIGHT NEAR THIS SUV. WHAT WE’VE LEARNED SO FAR, GUYS, IS THAT CHP TELLS US TWO PEOPLE WERE DRIVING DOWN HIGHWAY 50 WHEN THERE WAS SOME TYPE OF PHYSICAL ALTERCATION BEFORE THAT SUV YOU SEE ON YOUR SCREEN CRASHED ON THE SHOULDER OFF RAMP. NOW, WE’RE TOLD THAT PEOPLE IN OTHER CARS WERE ACTUALLY CALLING IN TO REPORT THAT SOMEONE WAS BEING ASSAULTED. WHEN OFFICERS ARRIVED, THEY FOUND A WOMAN UNRESPONSIVE WITH CUTS ON HER FACE AND HEAD. SHE WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL AND A MAN IS NOW DETAINED AND BEING QUESTIONED. I WANT TO SHOW YOU THIS VIDEO OF A DIFFERENT VANTAGE POINT THAT SHOWS WHERE THAT SUV CRASHED. WE’VE SEEN INVESTIGATORS TAKING PHOTOS, PUTTING DOWN EVIDENCE MARKERS. THIS IS BOTH AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE ASSAULT, BUT ALSO INTO THE CRASH ITSELF. CHP WOULD NOT SAY WHAT THE RELATIONSHIP IS BETWEEN THESE TWO PEOPLE, OR IF THIS ASSAULT INVOLVED SOME TYPE OF WEAPON. AT THIS POINT, CHP IS ONLY CONFIRMING THAT THIS IS A FELONY ASSAULT INVESTIGATION. IT APPEARS THAT THERE WAS A PHYSICAL ALTERCATION OCCURRING AS THE VEHICLE WAS TRAVELING DOWN U.S. 50 EASTBOUND, AND THEN IT VEERED ONTO THE OFF RAMP WHERE IT ULTIMATELY CAME TO REST ON THE SIDE OF THE HILL. AS WITNESSES AND THE INVOLVED PARTIES ARE INTERVIEWED, WE’LL BE ABLE TO DETERMINE EXACTLY WHAT TRANSPIRED TONIGHT IN TERMS OF CHARGES AND HOW THE CASE WILL PROCEED. CHP SAYS THANKFULLY, THERE WAS NO ONE ELSE HURT IN THIS SITUATION. NOW, CONSIDERING THIS SUV CRASHED AND VEERED OFF THE HIGHWAY RIGHT AT THE START OF THE EVENING RUSH HOUR, OTHER PEOPLE COULD HAVE BEEN HURT, BUT THEY’RE THANKFUL THAT NO ONE ELSE WAS INVOLVED. NOW WE’RE STILL WORKING TO LEARN THE CONDITION OF THAT VICTIM. INVESTIGATORS ALSO SAY THEY MENTIONED THOSE LACERATIONS TO HER FACE AND HER HEAD. THEY COULD NOT SAY IF HER INJURIES WERE STRICTLY FROM THE ASSAULT OR ALSO FROM THE CRASH ITSELF. WE’RE WAITING FOR AN UPDATE THAT WE’RE EXPECTING TO COME TOMORROW MORNING IN RANCHO CORDOVA. A physical altercation preceded a single-vehicle crash on a Rancho Cordova off-ramp from Highway 50 on Monday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.Around 5:30 p.m., CHP officers responded to the report of a crash on the Mather Field Road off-ramp from eastbound Highway 50. As officers were responding, witness reports came in about a felony assault at that location.Officials said officers arrived and found an unresponsive woman with lacerations to her head and face. It’s not clear if the injuries were from the crash or the assault. She was taken to an area hospital for her injuries.A man who was in the vehicle had minor injuries and has been detained, CHP said. Officials said it’s not clear what the relationship is between the two parties. However, they did note that the physical altercation began while the vehicle was traveling on Highway 50, before it exited the freeway. The car then veered into the side of a hill on the off-ramp.CHP said the off-ramp will likely remain closed for several hours as investigators piece together what happened.
