Dawn Staley believes Aliyah Boston is destined to become the WNBA’s Most Valuable Player.

Boston is already one of the best players in the league after three seasons with the Indiana Fever. The 23-year-old has just enjoyed her best professional season to date, helping the Fever reach the WNBA Playoff Semifinals and win the Commissioner’s Cup.

The three-time WNBA All-Star averaged a career-best 15 points per game in the league in 2025 and was named on the All-WNBA Second Team. Staley, who coached Boston at South Carolina, is confident the basketball star will reach the very top of the sport.

“I think she’s on her way to being the MVP because she works extremely hard at her craft,” Staley said.

Staley knows exactly what Boston can produce after their time together at South Carolina. Boston helped the Gamecocks win a national championship in 2022 and was named the NCAA Tournament MOP (Most Outstanding Player) for her efforts.

In 2022, Boston was also recognized as the AP Player of the Year and Naismith College Player of the Year, among other honors. Her tremendous college career led to the Fever picking her first overall in the 2023 WNBA Draft.

After South Carolina defeated Kim Mulkey’s LSU in February 2023, Staley said of Boston: “I think the beauty of Aliyah is her entire body of work. And there’s not anyone like her who produces on both sides of the basketball. Nobody.

“So, as far as I’m concerned – and I’ve got no vote in it besides my mouthpieces – she is the best player in the country.”

And Staley said two months before that: “It takes four people (to guard Boston). No one in the country has to guard that. No one has to guard against all of that. Because of her, everyone on our team got better. She’s still the best player in the country.

“I don’t care what people post or say or whatever – no one’s seeing what she’s seeing. And until someone is seeing that, then you really can’t take her National Player of the Year award away.”

Boston’s time in Indiana has been slightly overshadowed by Caitlin Clark’s emergence at the Fever. Like Boston, Clark was also a first overall pick and named the WNBA’s Rookie of the Year.

Clark was forced to take a back seat in 2025 due to multiple injuries, but she’s played enough with Boston to know what her teammate is capable of.

“She has such a good feel for the game,” Clark said of Boston. “Such a great facilitator for our team. She’s the best all-round post player in the league. I don’t think it’s up for question.”

Indiana will hope both Boston and Clark stay healthy in 2026 to mount a challenge for the championship. The Fever haven’t won a championship since 2012, but they boast a roster capable of winning tournaments.
