Former Tennessee Volunteers men’s coach Bruce Pearl stunned viewers on Monday when he brought up WNBA legend Candace Parker’s dating life on national TV. His unexpected comment offered a glimpse into Parker’s time at the University of Tennessee, catching fans and her off guard.
Pearl and Parker were calling Tennessee’s NCAA game against Rutgers on Monday when he suddenly brought up her college dating life.
“Candace was a beautiful young student athlete at Tennessee. She was dating one of my guys and she was talking to two or three others at the same time,” Pearl said.
Pearl then doubled down, sharing a story about asking Parker not to break up with one of his players right before a game.
“Hey, Candace, you remember there were a couple of times where I would come to you and say, ‘Honey, don’t break up with him tonight,’ right? You remember this? I literally did. And she would be like ‘Okay.’ We had that relationship. Candace was mature beyond her age,” Pearl continued.
Parker, initially defensive, eventually laughed it off and supported Pearl’s story with her own recollection.
“I was in your office and talking to you,” Candace recalled. “And I think that’s the thing I love the most about the University of Tennessee, is the relationships and you know the stuff that will stay in 2004 to 2008.”
The three-time WNBA champion spent three years at Tennessee, earning a 100–10 record and averaging 19.4 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game. She declared for the WNBA draft in 2008 and was selected first overall by the LA Sparks.
Candace Parker once opened up about her marriage to her wife while offering thoughtful insight into her first marriage.
Candace Parker opened up about her marriage during a June appearance on The Breakfast Club. The WNBA legend has been married twice, first to former NBA player Shelden Williams in 2008 before their 2016 divorce, and later to Anna Petrakova in 2019.
During her conversation, Parker shared that she once pictured herself ending up with a “prince charming” before ultimately finding her true home with her wife.
“I always grew up envisioning myself with a Prince Charming. It is crazy cause sometimes life hands you things in packages that you least anticiapate it coming in and that’s what happened with my wife, she’s my best friend,” Parker expressed.
Parker shares a daughter with Williams and has two sons with Anna Petrakova.
