Fort Myers police arrived on the scene at around 11 a.m., where they sectioned off the area and assessed how to trap and remove the animal safely.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission was called to assist police. Upon arrival, they aided police in the eventually removal of the animal.
At 12:36 p.m., the coyote hopped over the barrier and into the parking garage, saving itself.
Shortly after, law enforcement contained the area in an effort to capture or help direct the coyote from the populated area.Â
FWC officials spoke with WINK News, reporting that they have chased it out of the garage and towards McGregor Boulevard. It was last seen running towards the woods.
Initially, we received reports that the animal was capture by a Fort Myers Police Department officer; however, that reporting was inaccurate.Â
The area has since reopened.
The Luminary Hotel gave a brief statement regarding the coyote scene on their Facebook account.Â
“When you say your hotel has great views…and a coyote takes it literally. Don’t worry, we offered an early check-in and some Bonvoy points to get him off the ledge. This morning, a coyote was spotted on an upper level of the city-managed parking garage adjacent to Luminary Hotel & Co. The hotel team immediately notified the proper authorities, and units from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the Fort Myers Police Department, and Fort Myers Fire Department responded. The coyote moved back into the garage on its own and ultimately returned to safety, with officials monitoring its path. Our guests and staff were never at risk, and hotel operations continued as normal. We appreciate the quick response from all agencies involved and the community’s concern as the situation unfolded!”
