San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan isn’t considering a quarterback change after Brock Purdy threw three first-half interceptions in Monday’s 20-9 win over the Carolina Panthers.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Shanahan explained he never thought about putting in Mac Jones because Purdy was just a “hair late” on his throws even though the reads were correct.
“It makes me a lot more hesitant if they’re all bad decisions,” he said of Purdy’s turnovers. “But he was seeing it right. They were all good decisions. He just missed the throw on them. Just a hair late. And when you’re a hair late on stuff, you can’t throw behind (your receivers).”
Purdy became the first quarterback since Lamar Jackson in 2021 to throw three interceptions in the first half of a game his team was leading at the intermission. The fourth-year player has thrown for 979 yards with eight touchdowns and eight interceptions in four starts.
There are some comparisons to be drawn between Purdy on Monday night and Jackson’s outing from four years ago.
Jackson wound up missing the final four games of that season due to an ankle injury.
Purdy returned last week after missing six consecutive games due to a turf toe injury. He also missed games in Weeks 2 and 3 as a result of the toe and a shoulder injury.
When the 49ers played Purdy in Week 4 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, it looked similar to Monday night. His accuracy was off, with several throws missing high and he committed three turnovers (two interceptions, one fumble).
Shanahan told reporters after San Francisco’s Week 9 win over the New York Giants that Purdy was unlikely to be 100 percent healthy during the season, but there’s no expectation he will require surgery on the toe.
If Purdy continues to struggle with the 49ers fighting for a playoff spot, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Jones get some run again. He fared very well in eight starts with Purdy out, going 5-3 with 2,151 passing yards with 13 touchdowns and six interceptions.
San Francisco will face a stiff defensive test in Week 13 against Myles Garrett and the Cleveland Browns.
