The Wilkes Heritage Museum announced the release of a new book titled ,“The Robert Cleveland Log Home.”
With a forward written by the Rendezvous Mountain Chapter of the DAR, this 95-page book documents the story of this historic structure from its 1779 construction through its relocation to Wilkesboro in 1986.
The book was researched and written by Jason Duncan, who is on the museum staff.
For the past 40 years, it has been an integral part in the museum’s efforts to present Wilkes County history to local residents and out-of-town visitors.
The book includes dozens of photos of the home, both at its original location on Lewis Fork and during its reconstruction behind the museum.
The book also highlights original documents that tell the story of Robert Cleveland’s family including his two wives and his seventeen children.
Maps, censuses, tax records, and court documents illustrate how involved this family was in the county’s first decades.
Recognized as the oldest home in the county, the cabin was lived in by five generations of Cleveland’s descendants. Some of the families related to the Clevelands include Reynolds, Hutchinson, Brooks, Vannoy, McGlamery, Eller, and Yates.
The museum is open Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A tour of the Robert Cleveland log home is included with admission to tour the museum.
The book is available in the museum gift shop for $20, and all proceeds support the museum. It’s also available for purchase online: https://www.lulu.com/spotlight/whm.
