There’s a new plot twist in the saga of the Gainesville–Brunswick sideline-clearing brawl that took place last week in the third quarter of a Class AAAAA second round contest: Gainesville-Langston Hughes is now postponed until further notice due to a challenge of the judge’s ruling by the Georgia High School Association (GHSA).
According to a report, the GHSA is filing an appeal to the ruling made today by Hall County Superior Court Judge Clint Bearden in granting Gainesville a request for an injunction against the governing body of Georgia high school sports.
GHSA executive director Tim Scott provided the following statement to Gainesville and Langston Hughes regarding the status of their Class 5A state quarterfinal game this week, per the report.
Adam and Lamarr,
The Georgia High School Association is filing an appeal of the court decision today. As a result, Friday’s game between Gainesville High School and Hughes High School will be postponed until a decision on the appeal is reached. We will reschedule the game once the appeal decision has been rendered.
If you have any questions, please let me know.
Respectfully, Tim Scott Executive Director
The GHSA had initially decided to suspend 39 Gainesville players, but decided to uphold 35 of those and to not suspend four Red Elephant players. Gainesville had decided on Tuesday to file an injunction, which led to Wednesday’s hearing in their request to allow the suspended players to play against Langston Hughes later this week.
Gainesville head coach Josh Niblett had voiced his frustrations on Tuesday regarding the decision made by the GHSA to suspend 39 Red Elephant players, which was later dropped to 35.
“You watch the two helmets get ripped off, you don’t see our kids throw a punch, you don’t see our kids push the kid, you see our guys step in between them and then get his helmet ripped off and then the guy jabs him with a punch. And they still back away,” Niblett said via a 11Alive report.
