Two members of the West Virginia National Guard were shot in Washington, DC, today, according to the state’s governor.
They engaged in gunfire with the suspected shooter prior to being shot, according to two law enforcement sources. The sources said the suspect was detained and transported away from the scene on a stretcher.

West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey confirmed the shooting in a social media post.
“It is with great sorrow that we can confirm both members of the West Virginia National Guard who were shot earlier today in Washington, DC, have passed away from their injuries,” Morrisey wrote. “These brave West Virginians lost their lives in the service of their country. We are in ongoing contact.”
Morrisey then issued a conflicting statement raising questions about whether the Guardsmen died of their wounds.
The shooting was approximately two blocks from the White House.
