SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) – Savannah leaders are tackling major flooding problems and what it’s gonna cost you.
WTOC visited city hall to learn more about a new fee that could go into place in a matter of months.
This comes right off of the budget retreat where the council crafted and addressed multiple goals. Tuesday those goals were brought up, and at the end the council discussed a stormwater drainage fee.
The user-based fee would be dedicated to creating a dedicated revenue stream for the stormwater system, which currently has no dedicated funding. This was brought up due to increased levels of rain according to the Chief of Water Resources, Ron Feldner.
“We know that it rains more in Savannah than it did 10-20 years ago, I’ve lived here for about 15. We’re calling it our hand service delivery plan for stormwater management to be more responsive to these more frequent more impactful rainfalls that’s affecting the community from both the flooding as well as a water quality perspective,” said Feldner.
Alderman Nick Palumbo told us the average homeowner would pay about $5 a month.
The fee would be a bi-monthly bill with the first payment cycle starting in July of 2026 were this plan to be approved. It’s having its first reading and with an opportunity for public comment at Tuesday’s city council meeting.
