ROCKWELL — A family was displaced after a fire just outside of Rockwell on Friday night.

The incident began when firefighters received reports of a structure fire in the 100 block of BK Avenue, just off of East U.S. Highway 52. When firefighters arrived on scene, they found approximately 60 percent of the home involved, said Chief Kenzie Overcash with the Gold Hill Volunteer Fire Department, meaning that heavy fire was showing from the front porch of the home and into the crawl space.

All of the residents were able to escape the home before firefighters arrived without injuries, confirmed Overcash.

Firefighters were able to access the fire originally through the front door before the porch collapsed, causing minor injuries to a firefighter who fell, said Overcash. That firefighter was checked by EMS personnel on scene and released.

Overcash confirmed that the home suffered heavy damage in the fire. The Red Cross was contacted to assist the residents.

The fire is under investigation by the Rowan County Fire Marshals Office.
