A frustrated Aussie has revealed he feels he’s being forced to leave Australia for good after watching the quality of life for ordinary Aussies steadily fall over recent years.

The Sydneysider, who is in his mid-30s and completing a second degree, shared his bleak take on modern Australian life on Reddit.

“Lately it feels like the quality of life here has been slipping. Cost of living is insane, housing is basically a lifelong mortgage sentence, taxes and rates keep rising, and even groceries are pushing people to the edge,” he wrote.

“The culture feels like it’s narrowed down to this loop: work, gym, home, repeat. Everyone is exhausted and just trying to keep their head above water.”

He also cited rising house prices “eight to 10 times your yearly wage” as a major problem.

“People say to just avoid Sydney and move to a quieter city, but every other city is catching up in population, traffic and housing prices,” he continued.

The Sydneysider blamed the “lack of real community” as the biggest reason why he feels Australia is unliveable.

“In so many European and Asian countries, people actually live together. Streets feel alive, there are public spaces, third places, plazas, markets and local interactions.

“Here in south west Sydney, and honestly most suburbs, everything feels slapped together without much thought. Wide roads, giant shopping centres, no real community spaces. Just houses stacked everywhere with nothing that brings people together.”

He said areas in the Harbour City that do feel like communities, such as eastern suburbs and the inner west, are unaffordable.

“What is the alternative? Spend thirty years paying off a mortgage in an area with no soul, just grind forever,” he said.

Despite the fierce criticism, the student conceded his home country is “beautiful”, before revealing his plan to work in Australia for a couple of years and then leave.

The Sydneysider’s bleak take on Aussie life sparked a backlash from others who argued that while the quality of life for people all over the world was declining, Australia was still the best place to be.

“I love living here, the lifestyle is second to none. Despite the challenges, Australia is the best country to live in, it’s a lot worse everywhere else,” one wrote.

“Australia is the best place to live in the world… amazing pay, amazing beaches, huge houses and just great quality of life. But we live in Melbourne which is obviously easier and better than Sydney,” another added.

“Everyone we know overseas envies us! Quality of life might have slipped but it’s still 100 per cent better than any other country.”
