Lorain officials issued a precautionary boil advisory for residents in the Red Hill Pressure District after a cellular service issue drained a water tower.

CLEVELAND — The City of Lorain says some of its residents should boil their water after a cellular service outage drained the city’s Red Hill Water Tower in the early hours of Friday morning.

According to a press release from Mayor Jack W. Bradley, cellular signal was cut off from the City of Lorain Water Purification Plant from just before midnight until about 5:15 a.m. Friday. During that time, the Red Hill Water Tower was completely drained.

The city issued a Precautionary Boil Advisory for residents in the Red Hill Pressure District.

“This is being issued in anticipation that some customers within the pressure district could have dropped below the minimum operating pressure of 20 psi,” the city said. “As a precaution, and in accordance with EPA regulations, all customers within the area are advised to boil their water until further notice or use an alternative source of drinking water such as bottled water. Water used for drinking or cooking should be brought to a full boil for a minimum of 3 minutes and allow to cool before use.”

City officials say the advisory is in effect until further notice and will last at least 24 hours. Water samples were collected on Friday and will be read shortly before 1 p.m. on Saturday, Lorain Director of Utilities Joseph Carbonaro told 3News.

“As long as [the samples] are all clear. the precautionary boil advisory will be lifted shortly thereafter,” Carbonaro said via email.

Residents can contact the City of Lorain Water Distribution Department at (440) 204-2285 for further updates between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. Residents dealing with after-hour water emergencies are asked to call (440) 204-2280.
