WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — While most people were elbow-deep in shopping carts hunting for Black Friday bargains, the CBS12 News team had a very different mission: saving a squirrel in distress.

With most shows off for the day, the newsroom was unusually quiet—until a furry visitor turned the station into a wildlife rescue center. The squirrel had somehow wandered into the enclosed patio and found itself trapped, peering nervously through the glass as staff gathered to brainstorm an escape plan.

Enter Sports Director John Evenson, who channeled his inner MacGyver. Armed with chairs, a step stool, and a broom, Evenson engineered a makeshift ladder designed to guide the squirrel to freedom. The plan? Simple in theory, tricky in execution.

After several failed attempts and a few funny moments, reinforcements arrived: a producer and a master control operator joined the effort.

Together, they coaxed the squirrel toward the improvised escape route in the video. Finally, with a burst of determination, the squirrel scurried up the broom, leapt onto the roof, and disappeared into the open sky — free at last.

No deals were scored, but CBS12 News walked away with something better: a heartwarming Black Friday story and bragging rights for the most creative rescue of the day.
