Arlene Simmons will be the new city alderwoman for Milledgeville’s District 2 in January. Simmons defeated her opponent Brooks Snider in a special runoff election Tuesday.

Simmons received 77 votes, or 77.78%. Snider received 22 votes, or 22.22%.

The District 2 race was the only race to be decided Tuesday, garnering just a 10.3% voter turnout.

Simmons, a local business owner and registered nurse, garnered the most votes in the Nov. 4 city election, while Snider, who works at The Cook Building at Central State Hospital, finished runner-up.

A third candidate, Shidonna Solomon finished just four votes behind Snider.

Simmons nearly pulled out a victory without a runoff.

She collected 50% of the total vote in the three-person race for the seat presently held by City Alderwoman Jeanette Walden. Simmons only needed one more vote to pull out an outright victory in November.
