Supermoon rises across Northern California this week. When to see it

For the best viewing, look to the Eastern sky.

I KNOW FROM MY DRIVE INTO THE OFFICE I NOTICE THE BRIGHT BULB IN THE SKY. NOT THE SUN, BUT THE MOON, AND IT IS GLISTENING AS IT’S GETTING READY TO GO INTO THE FULL MOON PHASE BY LATE TONIGHT INTO TOMORROW. OFFICIALLY, TOMORROW IS WHEN IT’S GOING TO HIT ITS PEAK, AND THIS WILL BE ONE OF OUR FINAL SUPERMOONS FOR THE MONTH OF DECEMBER. LOOKING OUT ACROSS DOWNTOWN. IT’S A COOL MORNING. THE BREEZE IS UP, TEMPERATURES ARE IN THE LOWER TO MID 40S IN THE VALLEY, 26 AT THE TOP, NORTH WIND RIGHT NOW AT 13 IN YUBA CITY. A LITTLE STRONGER FOR FOLKS TRAVELING INTO FAIRFIELD OR OUT OF FAIRFIELD WHERE THOSE WINDS ARE RIGHT NOW, RAMPING UP CLOSE TO 20MPH SUSTAINED WINDS. NORTH WIND IS AT SEVEN IN SACRAMENTO, AND YOU COULD CLEARLY KIND OF SEE THE CONTOURING HERE OF THAT YELLOW. IT’S ALONG AND WEST OF I-5, A GOOD INDICATOR THAT WE TYPICALLY GET A NORTH WIND EVENT, A SPOT LIKE FAIRFIELD, FOR EXAMPLE, EXPERIENCES SOME OF THE STRONGER PEAK GUSTS DURING THE DAY. SO YOU PROBABLY WONDER IF YOU LIVE IN FAIRFIELD OR SOLANO COUNTY WHERE THOSE WINDS ARE GOING TO RAMP UP AND IT’S GOING TO BE JUST AFTER DAYBREAK. NOTICE THAT BETWEEN ABOUT NINE AND 11 A.M., THAT’S WHEN THE WINDS START TO STREAM UPWARD. WE COULD HAVE GUSTS PUSHING TO 40MPH BEFORE THINGS REALLY START TO EASE. CLOSER TO SUNSET TONIGHT, WEATHER PATTERNS SET UP HIGH PRESSURE BUILDING HERE OFF THE EASTERN PACIFIC, AND AN AREA OF LOW PRESSURE DIVING TOWARDS THE ROCKIES, PRODUCING SNOWFALL FOR COLORADO AROUND HERE. AGAIN, WE’RE JUST GETTING THE NORTH WIND. THIS IS GOING TO BE A DRY WIND EVENT. 7:00 IN THE MORNING. WINDS GUSTING CLOSER TO 3540 MILES AN HOUR IN WINTERS. WOODLAND. COLUSA COUNTY, SUTTER COUNTY AREA. AND THOSE WINDS GUSTING ON SOME OF THE RIDGE TOPS THERE IN THE SIERRA OUT OF THE NORTHEAST, WE GET TO ABOUT NOON. THOSE WINDS WILL START TO GRADUALLY EASE. AND THEN NOTICE, AS WE HIT ABOUT 4:00 IN THE AFTERNOON, WINDS ARE REALLY STARTING TO TAME DOWNWARD. SO AGAIN, THE BIG SET-UP HIGH PRESSURE. AND ONCE THIS AREA OF LOW PRESSURE STARTS TO WORK TO THE EAST, ESPECIALLY AFTER THE SUN GOES DOWN TONIGHT, THE WIND STARTS TO DIMINISH. WE GET INTO THE START OF THE WEEKEND FOR FRIDAY, AND WHAT WE’LL NOTICE IS WEATHER SYSTEMS GOING BY TO THE NORTH. BUT THIS AREA OF HIGH PRESSURE, EVEN THOUGH IT’S FAR AWAY FROM THE WEST COAST, IS STILL GOING TO HAVE AN INFLUENCE ON US BY KEEPING US HIGH AND DRY. WE’RE GOING TO BE DRY FOR SUNDAY WITH INCREASING CLOUDS, AND YOU’LL SEE THAT EXTENDED HERE IN THE SEVEN DAY FORECAST. BUT TEMPERATURES NOT MOVING AROUND ALL THAT MUCH. MORNINGS WILL BE COOL IN THE LOWER 40S, A

Previous supermoons occurred in October and November. A supermoon is when the moon reaches perigee. This means it’s closest to the Earth. It gives the appearance of shining bigger and brighter. Sometimes it can look 14% bigger and 30% brighter on the horizon. In Northern California, the moon officially peaks at 3:14 p.m. on Thursday. However, it will remain nearly illuminated to its peak into Thursday evening. For the best viewing, look to the Eastern sky and away from city lights. If you have a telescope, this is a great time to use it to see all of the moon features.
