New jaguar spotted thriving in southeast Arizona

  • December 4, 2025

TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – Researchers have spotted a new jaguar roaming in Arizona.

On Tuesday, Dec. 2, the University of Arizona Wild Cat Center announced the never-before-seen jaguar was photographed on three separate days in southeast Arizona in November.

The jaguar, Cinco, is the fifth known big cat in the area since 2011.

Over the last 15 years, the center has gathered hundreds of detections of the other four known jaguars in mountain regions just south of Tucson.

Researchers from the University of Arizona’s Wild Cats Research and Conservation Center rely on photos, videos, and other data to understand jaguar movement.

Experts are not giving out the exact location, which is normal for these kinds of discoveries.

The center said the new jaguar appears healthy and “underscores the importance of migratory corridors in sustaining populations of critical wildlife.”
