The only city-owned golf course in Ocala has seen a dramatic improvement in course conditions over the past year, with leadership attributing the changes to the diligence of city staff.

During Tuesday’s meeting of the Ocala City Council, City Manager Pete Lee gave a brief update on the improvements made at the Ocala Golf Club over the past year.

Lee says that staff and consultants have done a “great job” improving the condition of the course.

“The balls roll, the balls sit up. Everything has been positive out there in terms of the turf, especially,” said Lee. He also indicated that although the city has made progress at the site, there is still work to do, citing the bunkers that are in need of work.

Located at 3130 E Silver Springs Boulevard, the 18-hole Ocala Golf Club is the only city-owned golf course in Ocala. Its only other facility (Pine Oaks Golf Course) was eventually replaced with Aurora St. John Apartments.

Lee says staff has worked diligently to manage the course and prevent it from getting worse than the poor condition it exhibited last year.

In September 2024, the city approved the allocation of hundreds of thousands of dollars to replace irrigation and help improve course conditions at the facility. Before that meeting, staff reported that the irrigation system at the course was 15 years old and “failing to operate properly.”

According to city financial records, the Ocala Golf Club generated $1,869,184 from 43,170 rounds of golf during the 2024 fiscal year.

Outside of the city-owned course, there are several other private courses in Ocala and Marion County.

Two of those courses (Links at Spruce Creek South and the Country Club of Ocala) were sold for millions of dollars recently.
