ALTADENA, Calif. (KABC) — Members of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife were in Altadena Thursday afternoon, searching for a bear that’s been living underneath a man’s home for the past week.
AIR7 was over the scene as crews focused on the crawl space where the bear’s been spotted.
Ken Johnson, a local product photographer, first spotted the bear last week on his home surveillance camera.
“I thought he’d be long gone by now. It’s unnerving,” he told Eyewitness News. “I think the longer he’s there, the more comfortable he’s going to be, and this won’t end.”
An Altadena man got a big surprise when he found a 500-pound bear had made the narrow crawl space under his home a den for the winter.
Some residents believe the Eaton Fire destroyed the bear’s home, which is why it now roams their neighborhood looking for shelter and food.
The size of the bear underneath his home, which is tagged, is what concerns Johnson. He’s working on a plan to draw the bear out of the crawl space then block the entrance with sandbags.
