EUGENE — Oregon is promoting from within to fill its opening coordinator positions.

Tight ends coach Drew Mehringer and secondary coach Chris Hampton are being promoted to offensive and defensive coordinator, respectively, according to CBSSports.com. A source with knowledge of the matter confirmed Hampton’s promotion to The Oregonian/OregonLive.

Will Stein, who was hired as head coach at Kentucky, and Tosh Lupoi, who was hired as head coach at Cal, are staying on to call plays throughout Oregon’s time in the College Football Playoff.

Mehringer and Hampton each have play-calling experience and are involved in Oregon’s weekly game-planning.

Mehringer, 38, was promoted to co-offensive coordinator before this season, his fourth at UO. He came to Oregon after serving as quarterbacks coach at New Mexico in 2021 and was previously co-offensive coordinator and receivers coach at FAU (2020), receivers coach at Texas (2017-19), offensive coordinator at Rutgers (2016), receivers coach at Houston (2015) and co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at James Madison (2014).

Hampton served at co-defensive coordinator this season, his third in Eugene, prior to which he was defensive coordinator at Tulane for two years. He was also cornerbacks coach at Duke (2020) and had a prior stint coaching defensive backs at Tulane (2016-19) and McNeese State (2012-15).

The only non-coordinator on UO’s staff earning over $1 million this season, Hampton is currently signed through January 2027 for $1.2 million annually.

Oregon still has two vacancies to fill on its staff.
