Dozens of dead vultures were found on the property of a private elementary school.

Last Monday, local officials learned that 62 dead vultures were discovered on the athletic grounds of St. Bernadette Elementary School, which is located at 1453 Locust Lake Rd. in Pierce Township (about 20 miles outside of Cincinnati). 

The birds are being tested for bird flu by both the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and Clermont County Public Health.

“On Dec. 5, CCPH sent two birds for lab testing to determine their cause of death, specifically if highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI)—the “bird flu—was a factor. Lab results are expect back next week,” a statement from Clermont County Public Health posted to is Facebook page on Friday reads.

According to ODNR, the animals are “presumed positive” for bird flu.

“Once a presumed positive case is identified in a county, all additional dead birds found in groups of six or more are also presumed to be HPAI and are treated as such. Dozens of dead vultures were found on the property of a private elementary school,” a statement from ODNR reads.

Clermont County Public Health noted that the risk of bird flu in people is “very low,” and the disease has commonly found been across the county in wild birds.
