Eintracht Frankfurt have ‘verbally agreed’ a deal with Newcastle United forward William Osula ahead of the January transfer window. Osula, 22, was close to moving to the Bundesliga club in the summer, but the Magpies decided against letting him go, and he remained at St James’ Park.

But now, after playing just 213 minutes in the Premier League and a further 22 minutes in the Champions League, there is a sense that Osula’s time at Newcastle is coming to an end. With Yoane Wissa back from injury, Osula has been pushed down to third, or even fourth choice in the striker pecking order behind the former Brentford man and £65million summer addition Nick Woltemade.

According to BILD, Frankfurt are still keen on signing Osula and they have reached a ‘verbal agreement’ with the former Derby and Sheffield United player for the winter window. The club and the Denmark international have agreed on a five-year contract with a basic annual salary of £2.19m plus additional bonuses.

It’s claimed that Frankfurt would prefer to loan Osula with an option to buy. However, it’s unclear whether Newcastle will agree to the terms of the transfer, though a fee of between £17.5m and £21.8m is being discussed ahead of the January window.

Osula is said to be familiar with head coach Dino Toppmoller’s system, having held talks with him via phone calls back in the summer. He is thought to be ‘exactly what Frankfurt need’, especially as he can play on his own or in a front two.

Although Osula has given firm commitment to the Frankfurt project, it’s added that the ‘negotiating skills of sporting director Markus Krosche will be crucial’. And with Jonathan Burkardt out until the end of January and Michy Batshuayi not available until March, Krosche is eager to finalise the deal as soon as possible.

Speaking about a potential move for Osula in the summer, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe revealed: “I think it was well documented. It was quite close for him that he could have left in a variety of ways, whether that was loan, which was always our preference because I think from our view, we wanted Will to play.

“We wanted him to continue his development, which he did brilliantly last year because I think he committed to a path of limited game time but big training time.

“A lot of work with Graeme Jones, a lot of reviewing his performances, then a lot of putting work into action.

“The next step for me was for him to try and play regularly. So that was the aim, and especially with us bringing two strikers in, the thought was that he could continue that development best on the football pitch.

“Obviously it didn’t happen, and much to our relief it didn’t happen, because obviously Yoane [Wissa] picked up an injury and Will’s vitally important. We believe in his talents.”
