UT Health East Texas child psychiatrist weighs in on Australia’s under-16 social media ban

  • December 14, 2025

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) – As Australia welcomed the world-first social media ban for children younger than 16 on Wednesday, a UT Health East Texas child and adolescent psychiatrist weighed in on the ban.

UT Health East Texas child and adolescent psychiatrist Tiya Johnson, M.D., shared her thoughts on the ban and why social media can have negative effects on teens’ mental health.

“My first thought when I heard about this law was good for them, this is a start because again as a child psychologist we’re seeing the issues with mental health to not just social media but to technology in general,” Johnson said.

Johnson explained that it isn’t just social media affecting teens.

“While I do agree that social media affects teens and their mental health, I also believe clinically that it’s not just social media but it’s the widespread use of technology in general,” Johnson said.
