Set in 1850s Washington, the western drama stars Gillian Anderson and Lena Headey as the matriarchs of two very different families — one privileged and rich, the other made up of orphans and outcasts — who “find their fates linked by two crimes, an awful secret, a star-crossed love and a piece of land with silver underneath,” the show’s logline states.

Despite trending among Netflix’s top 10 series, several critics have panned “The Abandons” for being a “half-hearted” “grab-bag of Western tropes” that embodies everything frustrating in the current TV landscape.

In the acclaimed thriller, a concerned neighbor (Ruth Wilson) enlists the help of a private investigator (Emma Thompson) when a little girl goes missing after a house explosion. However, per the show’s logline, the two “suddenly find themselves in a complex conspiracy that reveals people long believed dead are still among the living, while the living are fast joining the dead.”

The show also stars Adeel Akhtar, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Tom Goodman-Hill, Darren Boyd, Tom Riley, Adam Godley, Sinead Matthews, Ken Nwosu, Fehinti Balogun and Aiysha Hart.
