The teaser of the Hindi version of Dacoit: Ek Prem Katha, was launched with a lot of fanfare on December 18, at a five-star hotel in Mumbai, in the presence of lead actors Mrunal Thakur, Adivi Sesh, and Anurag Kashyap, along with director Shaneil Deo. The teaser was loved for its mass-appealing treatment and the creative use of the song ‘Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast Mast’ from Mohra (1994), featuring Akshay Kumar and Raveena Tandon. The film was directed by Rajiv Rai who has often taken objection and even legal action for the utilization of the tracks from his films. Very recently, the veteran filmmaker dragged Dharma Productions, Namah Pictures Pvt Ltd, music label Saregama India Ltd and singer Badshah to court alleging that it infringed his banner Trimurti Films’ copyright over the song ‘Saat Samundar Paar’ from Vishwatma (1992) in the upcoming film Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri.

EXCLUSIVE: Rajiv Rai opens on use of ‘Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast Mast’ in Dacoit - “I have given them permission; they have paid me...People may assume there’s an issue as I always take objection!”

Bollywood Hungama exclusively contacted Rajiv Rai to ask if he plans to take action against the makers of Dacoit: Ek Prem Katha as well or whether they incorporated the song after securing his permission?

Rajiv Rai, currently in Dubai, clarified to Bollywood Hungama, “Its legitimate. There’s no breach of contract. I have given them the permission. They have paid me for it as well. They were negotiating with my legal team for the last 2-3 months. So, the whole process was very clear and clean. There’s no issue there. People may think that there’s an issue as I always take objection! However, I take objection when they do it without consent.”

Rajiv Rai continued, “However, the makers of Dacoit were very good to me. I also got a call from Annapurna Studios; Supriya Yarlagadda, Nagarjuna’s niece, spoke to me. They are very well-behaved people. They went about it in a proper way.”

Recently, Rajiv Rai also gave the rights to the song ‘Duniya Haseeno Ka Mela’ from Gupt (1997) for a crucial scene in Aryan Khan’s web series, The Ba***ds Of Bollywood. In September 2025, Rajiv Rai told Bollywood Hungama, “Shah Rukh Khan told me, ‘It’s my son’s first show’. He was very polite and respectful. He’s a gentleman; how can you say ‘No’ to him? Also, it was for his son. I didn’t blink an eyelid. I told him, ‘Take whatever you want’! I don’t say that to anyone. I am not an easy guy to deal with (laughs)!”
