With the series debut of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy less than a month away, we are getting more bits and updates on the new series. Earlier in the week we got a new poster and a handful of promo and behind the scenes videos. But wait, there’s more! To wrap up the week, we have a new promo about a mysterious character, some fun behind-the-scenes video and pix, and more Paul Giamatti talking Star Trek.
Meet Tarima… and her scary Betazoid power
Over the week, the actors playing the five main cadet characters on the series released official promos for each of their characters. But there is an additional young character on the show who does not appear to be a cadet and is a bit of a mystery. Zoë Steiner plays Tarima Sadal, who is a Betazoid and daughter of the president of Betazed. And from previous trailers we can see that Tarima develops a romance with the main cadet character, Caleb Mir (Sandro Rosta). Today Steiner revealed a new short promo give us a bit more of a sense of her characters special “power.”
More behind-the-scenes
Paramount has taken a different approach with Starfleet Academy, allowing the cast and crew to post more glimpses of the show on social media. Clearly this is part of their effort to attract a younger audience that is more likely to hear about the show on their phones than in a TV commercial.
First up is a behind-the-scenes video posted by Karim Diané, who plays the Klingon Jay-Den Kraag. He narrates his first visit to the stages, including showing some sets under construction. We also get some shots from the makeup trailer, and more.
Next up is Star Trek: The Next Generation legend Jonathan Frakes, who directed the ninth episode of the season. He posted a photo of himself with series star, the “outstanding” Holly Hunter (Captain Nahla Ake).
Finally, you can check out some “on set shenanigans” with Gina Yashere (Commander Lura Thok) and Kerrice Brooks (Series Acclimation Mil, a.k.a. Sam).
Giamatti talks more Trek + Collider LA screening contest
A couple of weekends ago Paul Giamatti went down to Brazil to reveal the new clip and appear on a panel at CCXP. We posted an interview he did in Brazil (with Trek Brasilis) last week where Paul revealed he was a huge DS9 fan and talked about how Gul Dukat and other Trek baddies influenced his character Academy villain Nus Braka. Collider also talked to Giamatti at CCXP and they spent most of their time talking more about his Star Trek fandom, with a few more tidbits about Nus Braka. You can watch the full interview below.
Collider his hosting a screening of the the pilot along with a panel discussion on January 12th in Los Angeles. They are currently holding a contest for tickets. More details at Collider.com.
