(WKRC) – Director of the National Economic Council Kevin Hassett said President Donald Trump’s proposal to issue $2,000 checks to Americans using tariff revenue would depend on congressional approval, CBS News reported.

Speaking Sunday on “Face the Nation,” Hassett said Trump is expected to present a proposal to Congress in the new year to advance the plan.

Trump has floated the idea of a rebate for some Americans funded by tariff revenue. Last month, he wrote on social media that a “dividend of at least $2,000 a person (not including high income people!) will be paid to everyone.”

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the checks would likely be limited to households earning less than $100,000, though he said the proposal remains under discussion.

CBS News reported that Hassett said congressional approval would be required for the funds, which would likely be distributed through the tax code and require new legislation.

Hassett said the funds could come from tariff revenue but emphasized that Congress ultimately controls federal spending.
