Fans of the Boston Celtics have enjoyed the content being created by the players on the team, such as the “White Noise” podcast put together by Celtics guard Derrick White and cohost Alex Welsh, or the marathon streaming sessions broadcast by star Boston forward Jaylen Brown.
And this week, those two nodes in the player-produced media sphere created by Celtics players collided — and shed some light on why the latter star elected to become the media covering himself. Said Brown of the impetus behind his streaming ventures on White’s pod, “the reason I started streaming — (is) because … I’m going to just be candid. The media is very lazy.”

“I know controversy is what sells,” he continued. “So anytime they can put out something negative, they know they’re going to get more clicks, more engagement (…).”

“That’s not actual journalism,” said the star Celtics forward. You don’t get to get the full story — you only get to get the negative aspect of it. That’s what everybody gets to see first.”
“And then most people, because of social media, (and) people’s brains only have the attention span — they’re not going to look into what actually happened. And they’re just going to see the headline, and then that’s what they’re going to go with.”
And given how many rumors Brown has found himself in over the years he’s been in the league, wanting to seize control of the narratives that circulate about you is not just understandable — but a wise strategic approach in a media environment that tends to favor sensationalism and controversy over substantive engagement.
