Following our previous visit to Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects, we are moving our Meet Your Next Employer series to New York and Los Angeles this week to explore the work of Grimshaw.

Founded in 1980 by Nicholas Grimshaw, who passed away earlier this year, the firm has been recognized as a pioneer of the late modernist style that incorporated elements of industry and technology into building design. Last month, the firm was among the winners at the 2025 LA Architectural Award, while in 2024, the firm’s Elizabeth Line project won the RIBA Stirling Prize.

Over on Archinect Jobs, the firm is currently hiring for several roles to join their NYC and LA teams. For candidates interested in applying for a position or anybody interested in learning more about the firm’s output, we have rounded up four defining projects by Grimshaw that exemplify the firm’s ethos.

Opened in July 2025, Grimshaw’s LAX/Metro Transit Center Station in Los Angeles marks the first direct rail connection to Los Angeles International Airport. Designed with passenger flow and comfort in mind, the structure features sweeping canopies, large skylights, and glazed screens to enhance natural light and support intuitive navigation. Targeting LEED Gold certification, the station incorporates passive environmental strategies such as natural ventilation, daylighting, and shaded outdoor areas. Photovoltaic panels and EV bus charging capabilities have also been embedded.

Winner of the 2024 RIBA Stirling Prize for the best new building in the UK, Grimshaw’s Elizabeth Line infrastructure for the London Underground system is one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects undertaken in London in recent decades. Labeled as a new “exemplar of inclusive design” by the jury, the project includes many step-free pedestrian access points combined with hidden acoustic mats, a calming color palette, coherent wayfinding, and sensitive lighting to make it markedly easier to use than other segments in the diffuse 160-year-old transit network.

Shortlisted for the 2019 Stirling Prize, Grimshaw’s redeveloped London Bridge Station accommodates over 90 million annual passengers, featuring a vast concourse larger than Wembley’s football pitch. The scheme introduced extended platforms, new tracks, and improved connections, while incorporating historic fabric. Natural light, timber finishes, and expressive canopies enhance the passenger experience. “The station has a rich history, it was the first railway station built in the capital in 1836,” Grimshaw Architects notes. “Our project incorporates its layers of history by adaptively reusing spaces where we can and only creating new ones when we can’t.”

The Robert Poujade Pedestrian Bridge is one of four that will connect the Île du Ramier and the city. The bridge provides accessible routes through Toulouse’s new “green lung” on the Garonne River. The cable-stayed bridge stands out through a roughly 197-foot inverted V-shaped steel mast. The structure acts as a gateway to the island, and its design allows visitors to cross the bridge with uninterrupted views of the old town to the north and the Pyrenees to the south. The bridge features a simple material palette. The steel mast supports a 16-foot deck and a balustrade, which are both metal. At night, the bridge is illuminated by controlled lighting stretching down its path.
